Am I eligible to apply for a PhD
You must meet the academic and language requirements to apply for a PhD. Please read the residence requirements which determine whether you will be classed as a ‘Home’ or ‘International’ applicant. All our studentships are available to ‘Home’ applicants, but we are only permitted to offer up to 30% of our studentships (between 4 and 6 places) to ‘International’ applicants.
Academic requirements
We welcome applications from students in relevant natural science disciplines, for example the Earth, Environmental, Geographic and Life Sciences, plus those with degrees in physics, engineering, mathematics, statistics and computer programming. Please read the project descriptions carefully and we encourage you to email the project supervisor if you have any questions about the research topic or your suitability for the project you are interested in.
You should have obtained, or be about to obtain, a First or Upper Second Class UK Honours degree, or the equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK. If you have a Lower Second Class degree, you can be considered if you also have a Master’s degree or relevant professional (e.g. work) experience.
To support accessibility to PhD training opportunities, these studentships are not available to anyone who has obtained or is about to obtain a PhD degree (or equivalent).
Language requirements
If your first language is not English, you must meet the minimum English requirements for the PhD programme and institution you are applying for. Please check the university you are applying to for more information:
Nationality and Residency requirements
To be classed as a ‘Home’ student you must meet certain nationality and residency criteria which are complex and dependent on your individual circumstances. The rules cannot be adequately detailed here but your fee status will be determined by postgraduate administration teams after you have applied based on the information in your application.
Important: if you are classed as an ‘International’ student at application stage, you will only be eligible to be considered for a small quota of studentships (between 4 and 6 places this year).
Purely as a general guide, the following are likely to have ‘home’ fee status:
· UK Nationals (subject to meeting residency requirements), or
· Those with settled status, or
· Those with pre-settled status (subject to meeting residency requirements), or
· Those with indefinite leave to remain or enter
