Another sucess for the NERC GW4+ DTP as another one of our teams makes it through to the EnvironmentYES final! Rob Yarlett from Palm Solutions, described his team’s experience for us.
“After the success of our GW4+ colleagues, BPS, in Nottingham, it’s fair to say that we felt under pressure entering the Syngenta heat of Environment YES on the 11th-13th November. The team comprised of Tom Jenkins (Managing Director), Rose Willoughby (Science Director), Rob Yarlett (Marketing Director) and Becky Perkins (Finance Director). The idea behind the hypothetical company, Palm Solutions, was to address the problem of habitat destruction by palm oil plantations by producing a synthetic alternative, which could then be sold to high palm oil consuming companies that aim to cease deforestation as a result of their imports. After training in science commercialisation in the mornings, the afternoons, evenings and early hours of the morning, fuelled by coffee and biscuits, were then spent researching our market, IP and finance strategies required for our presentation in front of a panel of investors on the final day of the competition. The standard of the presentations was very high, so it was a shock to hear Palm Solutions announced as the winners! While it was extremely challenging, Environment YES is a rewarding experience that we recommend to new students in the DTP. We look forward to joining BPS in the final next month!!”
